Chapter Ten

Detective Damian Walker made a couple of stops before he got to the office the next night. He stopped for a coffee and snacks at the corner deli. He dropped a small bag of garbage from his car in the big container outside. It had the smell of piss and vomit, so no one was going to want to open the loose tie.

Once he pulled into the spot behind the tall building and parked in the Reserved spot that was not his to use, he pulled out another plastic bag and walked over to the back building. This was where the cars were worked on and other mechanical processes were done. Here also was where some items were tossed into an open area that would be handled with care and eventually burned.

He handed the black standard release bag to the cop on duty and signed all the forms. It was stated that it was only some debris that the firemen from last night’s fire stated was not important.

“Yeah,” Damian nodded. “All the important items are probably down in the basement with the lab guys sorting through them. You will get some more burn bags before everyone is done.”

He was right, as after a fire that involved bodies, there was a lot of evidence to go through and the big black CSI trucks brought too much back with them. The first load of unwanted was sent out withing a couple of hours and would continue through the next few days. Damian’s bag was just one among many that disappeared into the hot furnace that ate everything leaving no ashes.

At the end of the short meeting, he reported to the Chief that he had seen the gang hole burn down and even dropped off the usual stuff to be burned at the back before he came in to file reports.

“Come to my office for a minute.” Reede took off down between an open aisle and desks back to where his office door was open.

Once Reede was behind his desk and in the large chair he had moved into the office, he asked Walker to close the door and take a seat.

“Great job on wiping out the Valducci gang.” Reede pulled up some reports on his computer as he talked.

“All I did, Chief, was pass on the word. The guys on the streets and the SWAT teams did all the work.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah.” Reede waved his hand to stop the Detective from saying anything more. “And being first at the fire was such a coincidence. Well, it isn’t something that can go in your file, but I know someone who is cleaning up the streets. So in a quiet way, good job and keep it up. That is why I brought you in here.”

He flipped his computer screen around and it showed a report on a list of recent deaths. They were the sort of people who lived on the streets or were the low-end kind of users who bought with their last dollar.
